John joined the OAI management team in October 2007 and oversees OAI’s Strategy and Development departments. Since then John has assisted clients such as the Alexandria Capital Development Foundation, the American Association of Blood Banks, the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department, historic Pohick Episcopal Church, the Center for Alexandria’s Children, and Youth I. N. C, with major capital campaigns. His involvement in development management includes work with clients such as Mary’s Center, Kingsbury, the Washington Animal Rescue League, and the Writer’s Center.

A native of the Washington, D.C. area, John brings 25 years of nonprofit management, advocacy and fundraising experience to OAI. As a consultant, he has been responsible for numerous feasibility studies that provided the foundation for successful fundraising efforts for cultural, educational and historical organizations nationwide. John’s capital campaign work generated more than $40 million in support for leading museums, performing arts centers and historic sites in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, California, Georgia and New York.

John’s tenure in higher education includes five years at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he served as Assistant Dean and Director of Development for the Faculty of Arts & Letters and, later, as Director of Corporate Development university-wide. While at SUNY Buffalo, John was a key member of the team that launched the institution’s successful $250 million comprehensive campaign.

His work with government agencies and leading foundations resulted in major challenge grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Kresge Foundation, and multi-million dollar commitments from the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation and President George W. Bush’s G8 Host Committee.

John’s nonprofit management experience spans 12 years at the helm of some of the nation’s most respected orchestras, where he earned a reputation for fiscal stabilization and innovation in programming. John’s arts administration work culminated with the Buffalo Philharmonic, where he authored and implemented the landmark business plan that reversed decades of decline and provided the foundation for that orchestra’s recent growth and development.

John is a graduate of the University of Illinois, where he received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and resides in Alexandria with his wife, Cheryl. He is an avid cyclist, and enjoys cooking, reading and travel.
