Managing Director

Orr Associates, Inc. Position Summary:

We are seeking a seasoned and energetic nonprofit executive or fundraising professional with expertise in leading and exceeding fundraising goals for nonprofit organizations to fill the Managing Director position at OAI.  This position can be based out of our Washington, DC or New York City offices.  The primary responsibility of this role is cultivating, recruiting, securing and managing a book of business of $500,000 to $1,000,000 in revenue.  Candidates with extensive networks with senior nonprofit executives and Board members, existing nonprofit clients or books of business are encouraged to apply.

Providing high quality work and meeting or exceeding client expectations takes a talented, focused, experienced staff and Managing Director’s serve a critical function on the OAI team.  OAI Managing Directors are senior leaders at the firm.  They are responsible for generating viable new business opportunities for the company and managing key relationships with their clients.  They demonstrate strategic team leadership and provide experience and innovative thinking to all client projects.  They also serve on the OAI management team and participate in strategic decision making for the overall growth of the company.

 

Managing Director responsibilities include:

SALES

  • Establishing a viable annual revenue goal to achieve (or exceed)
  • Cultivating, recruiting, securing and maintaining client relationships
  • Positioning OAI within selected geographic or sector markets
  • Building and maintaining networks within the non-profit community

CLIENT RELATIONS

  • Communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences, including Executive Directors/CEO’s, CDO’s, board members, staff, donors, and key stakeholders
  • Find innovative solutions and implement strong ROI for clients
  • Cultivate and solicit high net worth individuals, foundations, corporate leaders, and c-suite executives
  • Collaborate with/participate in strategy, development, and management functions, as necessary, such as attending key meetings, cultivating key prospects, and identifying relevant development opportunities for each client

OPERATIONS

  • Working with assigned OAI team including Vice President, Director, Associate Director, Associate, etc., ensure all contracted projects are successfully managed and implemented
  • Monitor profitability of book of business and work with Vice Presidents to address deviations from budget and take corrective action to meet established goals

GENERAL MANAGEMENT

  • Serve on OAI’s Management Team to develop and manage the firm’s growth strategy
  • Provide expertise, guidance and oversight to all client teams, as necessary

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in related field preferred; bachelor’s degree required
  • 20+ years professional experience with a proven track record of meeting and exceeding fundraising and/or sales goals
  • Demonstrated skill sets in sales and marketing
  • Demonstrated experience leading a broad variety of development efforts through times of expansion and growth
  • Ability to analyze financial information; experience working with budgets and P&L statements
  • Desire to succeed in a dynamic, demanding, self-driven atmosphere – entrepreneurial spirit a must!
  • Ability to handle multiple demands within team setting
  • Significant experience leading and managing staff or project teams, and meeting established goals

Director, Fundraising and Development Management (One Director is New York-based, one is Washington, DC-based)

We are seeking a seasoned and energetic professional with background/expertise in fundraising and development management to fill the Director position at OAI. This position will be based out of our New York office or our Washington, DC office and the candidate will manage NY metro area or DC metro area based clients, as well as other clients nationally and internationally (as needed).

Providing high quality work and meeting or exceeding client expectations takes a talented, focused, experienced staff and Directors serve a critical function on the OAI team.  Directors lead our client teams and are focused primarily on creating and implementing efficient, capacity-building and fundraising plans to help our clients meet their development goals. Directors typically manage the day-to-day account operations, drive team work strategies, and serve as the principal liaison with the client.  They actively lead the fundraising efforts for the client.

Directors might serve as the lead on several clients across a year, or they may be assigned primarily to one key client and a few smaller assignments. Work is done on-site at the client’s office (requiring weekly travel) as well as in OAI’s office.  Directors are part of a team assigned to each client – there is support for the Director to achieve the client goals, as well as oversight required from the Director.

Based on the needs of our individual clients, this position may require up to 75% of time/3.5 days per week spent at the client’s site.  In addition to client team leadership, Directors are expected to assume an active leadership and mentoring role within OAI.

Director responsibilities include:

  • Devise and implement strategies for our clients in the following areas: various development activities (campaigns, major gifts, board fundraising, corporate giving, foundation grants, planned giving, direct mail, event-based fundraising), marketing, and communications 
  • Cultivate and solicit high net worth individuals, foundations, leadership at Fortune 500 companies, and c-suite executives
  • Communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences, including board members, staff, donors, and outside advisors
  • Build and maintain event and campaign fundraising planning and implementation to include leadership development, committee management, major gifts, and corporate sponsorship
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and fulfillment of contracted projects
  • Manage project teams and coordinate project work for others; serve as mentor and coach to team members
  • Discover solutions and employ new and innovative ideas for clients
  • Conduct strategic development planning as necessary and work with boards to implement development plans
  • Collaborate with/participate in strategy, fundraising and event management functions as necessary
  • Work with clients to recruit, educate and manage their board of directors
  • Manage independent contractors, as necessary

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in related field preferred
  • At least 10-15 years professional nonprofit sector experience in development with a proven track record of meeting and exceeding fundraising goals
  • Direct experience of 5 years or more successfully soliciting individual, major, corporate and foundation donors for six to nine figure gifts
  • Direct experience of 3 years or more creating donor strategies as well as department or organizational strategies
  • Knowledge of “best practices” in fundraising and nonprofit management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication -- attention to detail and strong editing skills
  • Ability to implement programs and activities that help identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual, corporate and foundation donors
  • Demonstrated experience with a broad variety of development efforts including event management, annual fund campaigns, capital campaigns, corporate giving, and foundation giving
  • Significant experience leading and managing staff or project teams, and meeting established goals
  • Experience working with departmental budgets

Associate, Fundraising and Development

Our Associates participate on client teams in various service lines, specifically participating in the administration, creation, and implementation of efficient, capacity-building plans for our nonprofit clients and helping clients meet and exceed their development goals.

Associate responsibilities include:

  • Providing support to client teams, including managing all administrative responsibilities
  • Prospect research and profiling
  • Creating marketing, development, and solicitation materials
  • Scheduling meetings with potential sponsors, board members, and volunteers
  • Helping coordinate the production of strategic plans, final reports, and events
  • Assisting in the development and execution of strategic fundraising efforts

Interns at OAI will have an opportunity to work in a professional environment with a diverse group of individuals. Interns are able to gain experience in fundraising, marketing, communications, and event planning through our work exclusively with nonprofit organizations. Intern (Strategy)

We are seeking a Strategy Intern to assist with audits, assessments, feasibility studies and plans, strategic planning, board development, and Women in Philanthropy projects for OAI clients. The Strategy Intern will support data collection and analysis, report writing, and presentation development. The intern will be immersed in the work of the strategy teams at OAI.

This role is a part-time position (approximately 16-20 hours/week) with hourly pay commensurate with experience. The position will be held through the end of the summer, with the potential to continue on during the fall semester.

Responsibilities:

  • Quantitative and qualitative data analysis, including revenue trends and survey results
  • Market and comparative research
  • Writing and proofreading
  • Presentation and report development
  • Internally-facing process analysis and research

Requirements:

  • Current MBA candidate in the Washington, DC area, preferably focusing on Strategy, Nonprofit Management or related field
