Children's Law Center
Children’s Law Center (CLC) fights so every child in DC can grow up with a loving family, good health and a quality education. Judges, pediatricians and families turn to them to be the voice for children who are abused or neglected, who aren’t learning in school, or who have health problems that can’t be solved by medicine alone. With 100 staff and hundreds of pro bono lawyers, they reach 1 out of every 8 children in DC’s poorest neighborhoods – more than 5,000 children and families each year. And, they multiply this impact by advocating for city-wide solutions that benefit all children.
CLC was transitioning between Directors of Development and needed to maintain momentum for end of the year fundraising. Additionally, CLC needed to assess their current development efforts, build a culture of philanthropy among the Board, and train the Executive Director and development staff on fundraising best practices.
In September 2014, CLC retained OAI to provide a high-level development assessment and fundraising assistance. OAI conducted interviews with the board and with staff members, reviewed available marketing and fundraising materials, and attended CLC’s annual Benefit to learn about the organization’s strengths and opportunities. In the next phase of work, OAI provided regular coaching of the Executive Director and Board Chair and conducted trainings with the staff and board to engage them and enhance their ability to raise funds for CLC.
Over the nine-month engagement, OAI provided strategic oversight of the development department, prepared an assessment and recommendations memo for CLC to achieve increased fundraising goals, and provided leadership and fundraising training to the Board and Executive Director. With support from OAI, CLC also reinvigorated its Development Committee and established a Board Giving Campaign that raised $700,000, resulted in increased board engagement, and significantly larger individual gifts from Board members.
"We've worked with OAI for many years now, and the longevity of our partnership is no accident. They consistently provide a level of effort and excellence that, year after year, yields outstanding events." -Mark Donovan, Vice Chairman, Marriott Foundation for People with Disabilities
