Services: Planned Giving

Planned giving, also referred to as “legacy giving” or “deferred giving,” is the process of making a significant charitable gift during a donor’s life or at death that is part of his or her financial or estate plan. Planned gifts typically require donors to retain a professional advisor to make effective use of legal and tax strategies and/or financial products.  Because of the level of complexity associated with planned gifts, development offices should dedicate staffing and resources to ensuring that they connect with and engage potential planned gift donors, who are likely loyal and committed donors to the charity, but who may not be on the major gift prospect list.

OAI works extensively with nonprofits to help them evaluate the effectiveness of their planned giving strategies as part of a feasibility study, and integrate planned giving into major gift programs and annual fund campaigns as appropriate.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Your Current Planned Giving Efforts

A thorough assessment is a critical first step in evaluating your planned giving, and identifying opportunities to increase engagement with these donors. An OAI team will meet with your internal stakeholders and staff, and undertake document discovery in order to:

  • Assess the impact of past planned giving at your organization, and the potential revenue impact from increasing planned giving;
  • Survey and analyze your database to identify loyal and consistent donors, and assess likely interest in and inclination to make a deferred gift; and
  • Evaluate your acknowledgement, recognition and stewardship process and activities specific to the needs and challenges of planned giving.

The assessment timeframe and scope of work will vary with the needs, size and maturity of the planned giving program, but most likely be in the range of 2 to 4 months.  At the end of the assessment, OAI will provide a comprehensive report including key findings, recommendations, and practical action steps you can take to leverage planned giving opportunities.
