Introducing Managing Director Richard O. Walker III |
|
OAI is pleased to announce the addition of Richard O. Walker III as Managing Director beginning January 1, 2010. As a Managing Director, Dick will be responsible for new business development and client account management. Dick initially established a partnership with OAI as a senior consultant in 2009, bringing with him over 35 years of fundraising and development experience primarily in the independent school sector.
Most recently, Dick served as the Vice President of Corporate Giving at FBR Capital Markets. While at FBR, Dick supported the growth and expansion of the firm’s philanthropic efforts, and helped bring in corporate and employee contributions totaling almost $10 million. He was responsible for the establishment of a comprehensive corporate philanthropy program including four different matching programs for employees, a grants program serving at-risk youth and families, and volunteer and pro bono programs. Dick helped grow the philanthropic impact of the FBR Open, the largest charitable event of the PGA TOUR regular season with more that $30 million donated to charity from 2004 to 2008.
Prior to joining FBR, Dick served at the Director of Development at the Landon School of 25 years. Landon’s Development Office saw the creation of new programs and increased revenue under Dick’s leadership. Dick led two capital campaigns for the school, raising more than $25 million in contributions combined, and increased annual giving from $100,000 to almost $1 million a year during his time as the Director of Development. He established a successful annual alumni reunion program resulting in dramatically increased participation by school graduates in funding and other measures of activities. Dick also created a planned giving program, emphasizing bequests and the use of other vehicles to impact Landon’s long-term financial health.
Dick also serves as the Chair of the Board of College for Every Student and sits on the Board of Directors for Mentors, Inc. and Princeton Project 55.
OAI is thrilled to bring someone of Dick’s stature and experience to the firm and knows that he will exemplify OAI’s commitment to excellence!

What's New: CEO Healthcare Forum |
|
On Monday, November 9, 2009, OAI hosted the first CEO Healthcare Forum, a bi-annual forum designed specifically for hospital CEO’s. This first time event, sponsored by Goldman, Sachs & Co., brought together an intimate group of DC-area hospital leaders to Georgetown’s Café Milano to discuss and exchange ideas about the political and philanthropic challenges and opportunities that exist in this uncertain economic environment.
The event featured guest speaker, Evan Jones, co-founder of Digene Corp., and moderator Ned Zechman, President and CEO of Children’s National Medical Center. Both spoke of the current challenges hospitals are facing, including medical system changes and a decreased bond market, and stressed the importance of hospital fundraising.
It is clear that during a time of healthcare reform and economic uncertainty, the need for these high-level discussion forums with hospital leaders is greater than ever before.
OAI is working to create forums to bring together leaders in the education and healthcare fields as well in 2010. To learn more about OAI’s upcoming forums, contact us today!

Employee Spotlight: Mirjam Krull |
Meet Our Entire Team |
As an Associate Director of Marketing and Development, Mirjam Krull serves a variety of nonprofit clients in the areas of event fundraising and management, campaign management, development management, strategic planning and nonprofit management. Since joining the OAI team in 2005, Mirjam has had the opportunity to partner with many OAI clients, including the Friends of the National Library of Medicine, DC College Access Program, Earth Conservation Corps and Higher Achievement Program, among others. While Mirjam is actively engaged with OAI client work, she also manages OAI’s information technology department.
Q: Since joining OAI in 2005, you’ve had the opportunity to really see the company grow. What are some of your best memories over the last 5 years?
A: The people and our clients! We have a very strong culture at OAI, which focuses on our staff and how to best serve our clients. In my opinion, our teams are currently stronger than ever. The best moments for me are those when we get to celebrate the many successes of our clients: exceeding gala fundraising goals, recruiting strong, new board members, and helping with many development and strategic planning assignments. My favorite memories are those that take place late at night, after a client gala that OAI has helped plan and execute. During those moments we share this truly wonderful bond with our team mates and clients. We value each other and know our success is due to our collaboration and team work!
Q: Since you’ve had the opportunity to work with over 15 clients thus far, what client in particular sticks out to you as having achieved great success?
A: During the past 5 years at OAI, I have witnessed many success stories, but the one that really stands out is DC College Access Program (DC-CAP). DC-CAP provides services that enable high school students in DC public schools and public charter schools to go to and graduate from college. OAI assists DC-CAP with fundraising strategy and activities for their multi-million dollar campaign. DC-CAP has a remarkable Board and very dedicated staff members who truly help make a difference in the lives of their students. They host annual events, Senior/Parent Luncheons, where thousands of DC high school students come with their parents to celebrate the successes of the year and to learn about financial planning and opportunities available for college. You need to attend one of these events to understand the depth and reach of DC-CAP programs. Most people leave these events in tears because of the stories of life-long struggle and hardship that these students share with us. But these stories have one thing in common: DC-CAP has helped all these students find opportunities and hope for a better future.
Q: On a personal note, you came to the United States over 10 years ago from Estonia. Are you able to travel home to visit family often?
A: I can’t believe it has been 10 years! I have a big family and I miss them every day. I go home at least once a year and sometimes even twice. In the past couple of years my family has come to visit me as well. It is a long trip to Estonia, involving planes, boats, trains and automobiles, but OAI is very flexible with my vacation schedule and always encourages me to make the trip back home. I am planning on seeing my family again next summer.
