Biography

Dick Walker joined the OAI team as a Managing Director in January 2010, after initially establishing a relationship with OAI as a Senior Consultant in 2009.  Dick brings over 35 years of fundraising and development experience primarily in the independent school sector.  Most recently, Dick served FBR Capital Markets as Vice President of Corporate Giving from 2004 to 2008.  Prior to FBR, Dick had a 32 year career at the Landon School as a teacher and development officer.  While at Landon, he served as Director of Development from 1982 to 2005.

While at FBR, Dick supported the growth and expansion of the firm’s philanthropic efforts, and helped bring in corporate and employee contributions totaling almost $10 million.  He was responsible for the establishment of a comprehensive corporate philanthropy program including four different matching programs for employees, a grants program serving at-risk youth and families, and volunteer and pro bono programs.  Additionally, he created a five-day residential leadership program for area teenagers held at George Washington University that brought young people into contact with community leaders and FBR employees.  Dick helped grow the philanthropic impact of the FBR Open, the largest charitable event of the PGA TOUR regular season with more that $30 million donated to charity from 2004 to 2008.

Landon School’s Development Office saw the creation of new programs and increased revenue under Dick’s leadership.  Dick led two capital campaigns for the school, raising more than $25 million in contributions combined, and increased annual giving from $100,000 to almost $1 million a year during his time as the Director of Development.  He established a successful annual alumni reunion program resulting in dramatically increased participation by school graduates in funding and other measures of activities.  Dick also created a planned giving program, emphasizing bequests and the use of other vehicles to impact Landon’s long-term financial health.

During his Landon years, Dick was a noted speaker at conferences on capital campaigns, major gifts and other topics.  He also served a number of nonprofit clients in a consulting role in the areas of feasibility studies, strategic planning, board development and campaign strategy.

Outside of his work with OAI, Dick serves as Chair of the Board of College For Every Student, a national nonprofit working with underserved urban and rural public school students nationwide to increase attendance and success in college.  He is also a member of the Board of Mentors, Inc., a Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization that matches adults with at-risk teenagers. Additionally, Dick serves on the Board of Princeton Project 55, an organization that provides increased opportunities for Princeton graduates to serve the public interest through fellowships and other programs.  Dick is married with four children.

The organization came to OAI for guidance and assistance in solving a key challenge – to create an environment where the Board and staff could openly and effectively address internal and external stresses.
